CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK, APPLYING FOR ADI REGISTRATION
& PART ONE TEST

Firstly, go to the DVSA website and click on “Become a Driving Instructor”. Answer the questions satisfactorily to see if DVSA allows you to go on to the next two stages; applying to become a driving instructor and applying for a criminal record check (CRB).

All the information needed to apply for a criminal record check is on the DVSA’s website. When the online application has been completed, proof of identity is required. Certain documents must be sent by post or the Post Office ID checking service can be used. Expect the postal service to delay the application for a few weeks.

When these stages are complete the Part One test (theory) can be applied for.

STUDYING FOR THE PART ONE TEST

Use this study guide to give home study a structure to follow. One topic will be studied at a time. Study should be planned and well organised. Follow these guidelines when carrying out study at home:

• Study little and often — up to 1.5 hours in each study period to avoid mental fatigue.
• Try to follow a set routine when studying and ensure you will not be disturbed by the phone or family.
• ‘Flag” books, like the Highway Code, so that key facts and important sections can be found easily. Index flaps or “post-its” could be used.
• Use highlighter pens to pinpoint relevant material which you feel may form part of the theory test, i.e. stopping distances.

Some areas of study might be difficult to remember or understand. Try summarising the key points of these topics into a list which can be more easily remembered. Use these “summary lists” as revision notes.
